James Banks was Loyalist who came to New Brunswick from North Carolina in 1783. He is thought to be the son of William Banks and Mary Sawrey[1]
He married Elizabeth Cowperthwaite, the daughter of Hugh Cowperthwaite and Sarah Mead of Monmouth, New Jersey, who also emigrated as Loyalists to New Brunswick in 1783[2].
They first settled in Sunbury County then on Tobique River in Victoria County: they had twelve children, including:
William Sawrey Banks who was born circa 1802, and died 20 Oct 1876, and who married Elizabeth Jane Tompkins, daughter of Elijah Tompkins and Frances Woodward in 1824[1][3]
John Banks, born circa 1806, who married (1st) Isabella Cummings in 1834, and then married Isabella/Belle Tompkins, the daughter of Elijah Tompkins and Frances Woodward[1], and lived in Maine[4]
Frances or Fanny Banks born circa 1808, who married Thomas Fowler of Lincoln, NB in 1829[1][6]
Thomas Banks born 1814, who married Catherine, and died in 1888 in Maugerville, NB[1]
George F. Banks born 1816, who married Frances Louise Perley in 1843[1][7]
Mary Banks born 1818, who married Horatio Nelson Sewell in 1829, and died shortly after her marriage[1][8]
Maria Banks who married Horatio Nelson Sewell after her sister Mary died[1]
Sarah Elizabeth “Sally” Banks born 1823, married Benjamin Morse in 1847 and moved to Ohio[1][9]
Charles B. Banks born 1826, who married Phebe Elizabeth Babbitt on 6 Sep 1849[1][10]
Charlotte B. Banks born 1829, who married Thomas E Babbitt on 6 Sep 1849 in Sunbury County[1][11]
Phoebe Jane Banks born 1830, who died unmarried[1][12]
James was killed in an attack by a Native while lumbering on the Tobique River, in Victoria County, New Brunswick[1]. Elizabeth was a widow in the 1851 Census[12]
He passed away about 1835.
