Biography

Sir Bryan FitzAlan's first wife. Some references call her Maud others Matilda. Of her inheritance were half of Bedale, half of Askham, two thirds of Bainton, all in Yorkshire, and lands in Bicker, Lincolnshire. Anthony Bek, Bishop of Durham, had granted (in the reign of Edward 1st) to Brian FitzAlan and Maud his wife, entailed, the manor of Bellester, Northumberland, of the forfeited Lordship of Wark, which was recovered by the heir against Miles de Stapleton of Catherston (Carleton?), and John, son of John de Grey of Rotherfield, the heirs of Brian and Maud. She, Maud, had a licence dated 10th April 1340 to alienate in mortmain land in Rokeby for the celebration of service, inter alia, for the soul of John de Grey of Rotherfield. She was also granted the advowson of the church of Rokeby, together with a messuage and a bovate and a half of land, to Egglestone Abbey to celebrate services for her good estate during her lifetime, and for her soul after her death, and for the souls of Brian her husband, their ancestors and heirs, and all the faithful deceased.

The Visitation of Yorkshire (made in 1563-64, by William Flower, Esq., Norroy King of Arms; edited by Charles Best Norcliffe, M.A., of Langton, London, 1881) has pedigrees of the Stapleton families. On page 295 it is stated that "Agnes doughter and heyr to Sir Bryan Fytzalan, Knight, by Agnes, doughter of the King of Scottes [Barry of eight Or and Gules] married Gylbert Stapleton." A footnote on the same page states that Gilbert's wife's mother was daughter of John Baliol and Devorguil of Galloway.

Thank you, Mary-Ellen. So it's just the first clause of Maud's biography that needs to be changed (to 'second'). Geoffrey.

If Brian FitzAlan died in 1306, wouldn't that make Maud his 2nd wife and widow, presuming that Muriel wasn't just a misreading of Maud/Matilda?

Agnes Matilda FitzAlan (de Baliol) is MAUD / Matilda and yes because she died in 1340
