Biography

Notables Project
Vernon Baker is Notable.

Vernon Baker was an American Medal of Honor recipient, awarded for his extraordinary heroism on April 5-6th, 1945 in Italy.[1]

Vernon was born in 1919.
Vernon Baker was awarded the Medal of Honor.

He served with the 92nd Infantry Division (Buffalo Soldiers) during World War II, and was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and Distinguished Service Cross during the War. He was bestowed the Medal of Honor in 1997 after an examination of war records by the US Army, who determined that there was racial disparity in the awarding of the Medal of Honor.[2][3]. He and six other Black Americans who served in World War II were formally awarded the Medal of Honor on January 12, 1997. A day later, Vernon (the only living recipient) and representatives for the six other men were given the awards by President.

He died in 2010 and is interred at Arlington National Cemetery.[4][5]
