James Rice BAIN was born in 1889 in Claremont, Cape Town, Cape Province, South Africa. He was the son of Irish-born Nathaniel Martin BAIN, a merchant tailor, and English-born Mary Ann WOOF. He was likely given the middle name "Rice" in honour of his paternal grandmother, his father's mother: Jane (Rice) Bain whose maiden name was RICE.

James was baptized in St. Saviour's Parish Church in Claremont, Cape Town. His godparents were his uncles James Woof (brother to his mother) and Harry Linington (husband to his mother's sister Susannah (Woof) Linington). ^[1]
