James Bain died young.

James Rice BAIN was born in 1889 in Claremont, Cape Town, Cape Province, South Africa. He was the son of Irish-born Nathaniel Martin BAIN, a merchant tailor, and English-born Mary Ann WOOF. He was likely given the middle name "Rice" in honour of his paternal grandmother, his father's mother: Jane (Rice) Bain whose maiden name was RICE.

James was baptized in St. Saviour's Parish Church in Claremont, Cape Town. His godparents were his uncles James Woof (brother to his mother) and Harry Linington (husband to his mother's sister Susannah (Woof) Linington). [1]

James passed away in childhood. [2]

Research Notes

There is a James BAIN (showing a burial at Arlington Cemetery in the USA) that should not be confused with James Rice BAIN (of Cape Town, South Africa). Some Ancestry and FamilySearch algorithms want to associate them because the James BAIN (USA) has the same birth date as James Rice BAIN (child of Nathaniel Martin BAIN and Mary Ann WOOF).

However, the death record for James BAIN (USA) show his parents as "William BAIN" and "Jessie Calloway":

West Virginia, Deaths Index, 1853-1973 Name: James Bain Birth Date: 5 Nov 1889 Death Date: 5 Aug 1966 Death Place: Berkley Co., West Virginia Death Age: 76 Race: White Gender: Male Father Name: William Bain Mother Name: Jessie Callaway FHL Film Number: 831273
