Biography

Robert Bailey is a part of US Black heritage.

Robert was born in 1874. He was the son of Squire Bailey and Frances Elder.

According to his daughter, Alice, a disagreement with a fellow worker on a plantation where he share cropped prompted Robert to leave his new wife and enlist in the United States Army. He served in the Spanish-American War including the assault on San Juan Hill.

He was stationed at Fort Warren in Cheyenne, Wyoming when he was discharged and found work with the railroad. While working out of Edgemont he was able to apply for a quarter of land to homestead.

He sent word to his family. His wife and infant daughter joined him in 1909 (the older children having been left temporarily with an aunt). The rest of the children followed in a year.

He lost his son, Burtes, in World War II.

He passed away in 1948. He is buried at the Edgemont City Cemetery in Edgemont, South Dakota.^[1]
