Biography

Notables Project
Leonard Bailey is Notable.

Leonard Bailey was an American business owner and inventor. [1] Although he grew up in poverty, he worked hard and built a franchise of barbershops in the Washington, D. C. area. [1] He also invented and received patents for a number of devices, many of which were for military and governmental use. [1] These included the folding bed, a mail-stamping machine, and a device to steer trains onto different tracks. [1]

He also helped establish the Capital Savings Bank of Washington, D. C., one of the very first black-owned banks in the United States. [1]

Leonard was a member of the the first mixed-race jury in Washington, D. C. [1]

Leonard was born about 1825. He passed away in 1918 from a sudden illness at age 93. [1] NOTE: This information is disputed by his Find A Grave memorial biography as well as 4 census records and his death certificate. They all state he was born about 1843. "Born in Georgetown, Washington, DC to John and Elizabeth Bailey. Family (with the exception of the father) living free as early as 1850 in Georgetown; John, the father, is living free as the head of a household in 1840 with a woman between the ages of 24 and 35, and a girl under the age of 10 - presumably the mother Elizabeth and oldest daughter, Ann."[2][3] Leonard died at age 75.[4]

Marriage

Leonard married Mary F Hove (aka Hooe, Hool) on 23 November 1864 in District of Columbia, United States.[5] They had no children.[3]

In the 1880 census Leunerd [sic] (age 37) was the married head of household in Washington, District of Columbia, United States. It was still just him and Mary in the home. Leonard was a barber.[7]

In the 1900 census Leonard (age 57) was the married head of household in Washington city, Washington, District of Columbia, United States. He and Mary had 2 boarders in the home. Leonard was still working as a barber.[8]

In the 1910 census Leonard (age 67) was the widowed head of household in Precinct 2, Washington, District of Columbia, United States.[9]

Death

Leonard died (age 75) on 1 September 1918 in District of Columbia, United States.[4] Burial was originally in the Columbian Harmony Cemetery, Washington, District of Columbia, District of Columbia, USA.[2] The biographical history on his memorial page stated he is believed to have been re-interred "... with about 37,000 others, in the National Harmony Memorial Park in Prince George's County, Maryland, in 1960."
