Elmer Cleveland Babst was born in 1885 in Kansas.[1][2]
Elmer married Myrtle Vessey, Sept 7, 1908, in Kansas. They had the following children:[3]
Elmer received his education in the Kansas schools and graduated from Campbell College, where he met and married his wife. They had a double wedding with Myrtle Vessey's best friends Iva and Harley Russell. Harley was killed in a drastic train wreck.
During the early years of their marriage, he farmed, then branched out into sales work, being one of the earliest horse and buggy salesmen for the "Book of Knowledge", in the western part of Kansas and eastern Colorado. He also worked in some of the early mining towns of Colorado. Later he successfully undertook the task of starting and building up the General Store for the Farmers Union, across the state of Kansas.
Early in his life he affiliated with the United Brethren Church and his faith was very real and meaningful to him.
During World War I, at the time of the Flu Epidemic, he ministered to the sick and aided the tired and weary, travelling from farm to farm, to farm, to help as best he could in nursing, cooking, doing farm chores, or wherever he was needed. He lived his faith. He had a great compassion for people and all his life made and kept many friends. He especially loved young people and was deeply rewarded in their love for him.
Around 1925, he settled on a small suburban farm in Topeka, KS and remained there until he moved to California in the early forties. For a short time he owned and operated a rabbit and chicken ranch in Corona, Ca. He enjoyed travelling and discovering for himself the beautiful and wondrous sights of the state, as well as up and down the entire coast and Canada.
His final years were spent in Riverside, where he could be near some of his family, his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Here he took care of his wife, and took great pride in his lovely garden. In 1967 he was deeply grieved at the loss of his son.
