William (known as Leo) was born in Sturt, South Australia during 1877. He is the son of William Hamilton Ayliffe and Ellen Maria Pollitt. He passed away in Victor Harbor, South Australia during 1967.

William served in the Australian Army Medical Corps during the Second Boer War in South Africa. [2]
William died in Victor Harbor, South Australia on 22 January 1967 at the age of 90 years.[4]
William was buried at the Victor Harbor Cemetery in Victor Harbor, South Australia on 24 January 1967.[5]
The following obituary was published in the South Australian newspaper, The Victor Harbour Times, on 3 February 1967:[6]
Late Mr. W. L. Ayliffe. The death occurred in his sleep on January 22 of Mr. William Lionel (Leo) Ayliffe, of Victor Harbour. Mr. Ayliffe died on his 90th birthday. Born at Plympton, (sic) S.A.,he served in the Boer War with two brothers, Messrs. Bert and Sidney Ayliffe. He remained in South Africa until 1904 when he returned to Australia. Settling down, he became a stock dealer, land agent, and farmer. He once described himself as a jack of-all trades in those faraway days. He managed a family property at Kangaroo Island, where he spent about 20 years before returning to the mainland. A keen chess player, he was S.A. champion on two occasions and runner-up on several occasions. He was a prolific reader and in recent years became a bridge enthusiast. Despite his age, Mr. Ayliffe enjoyed daily walks around the town. 'Acticity (sic) is the recipe of longevity,' was his motto. Mr. Ayliffe lost three sons in the services during World War II. His sister, Mrs. Violet Hamilton, of Ewell Vineyards, Glenelg, also died on her 90th birthday two years ago. Mr. Ayliffe, who is survived by his widow, three sons and two daughters. was buried in the Victor Harbour Cemetery, the Rev. J. F. Burell officiating at the grave side. A surviving brother, Mr. Bert Ayliffe, 87, lives at Golflands.
