Ethel Spraggins Ayler was a stage and television character actress whose career lasted over five decades. [1]
Ethel was born in Whistler, Mobile County, Alabama in 1930. Her parents were teen-aged Paul Ayler and Ethel Spragginss. She was counted on the census with them in Whistler, Alabama in 1930.[2]
Raised by her mother and her maternal grandparents, in 1940 ten-year-old Ethel Louise Ayler was living in her maternal grandparents' large Spraggins household, with her mother, a cousin, and nine aunts and uncles.[3]
In 1950 Ethel was living with her mother and stepfather, Alexander Reid, in Mobile, Alabama.[4]
Ethel was 21 when she married Howard William Creecy in Mobile in 1951,[5]
around the time that she graduated from Fisk University in Nashville.[1]
No known children.
She married again, before June of 1955, when she traveled to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil as Ethel Ayler Matthew.[6]
No known children.
Her mother also remarried, first to a Reid,[6] and later to Donald J. Flowers. Ethel was living in New York when her stepfather died in 1974.[7]
Her entry into New York theater was in an off-Broadway production of a Langston Hughes play, Simply Heavenly, in 1957. She went on from there to become Lena Horne's understudy in the Broadway musical, Jamaica. Her career spanned over five decades working on stage, in film, and on television. For years she had a recurring part as Claire Huxtable's mother on The Cosby Show. She also gave memorable performances in the films To Sleep with Anger (1990) and Eve's Bayou (1997). Her last Broadway role was in The Little Foxes (1997).
She was 88 when she died in California in 2018.[1][8]
