Louis Austin was an American journalist, civic leader and social activist.[1]

Louis Earnest Austin was born on 24 Jan 1898 in Enfield, Halifax, North Carolina, United States, son of William Louis Austin (~1869 - ) and Carrie (Johnson) Austin (~1877 - ). He was a journalist.

His siblings were:

Louis married Stella V Walker (1900 - 1981) Their daughter was Vivian (Austin) Edmonds.

Louis died on 12 Jun 1971 in Durham, Durham, North Carolina aged 73. He is buried in Beechwood Cemetery, Durham, North Carolina.[2][3]

"Louis E. Austin was a native of Enfield, North Carolina, He attended the National Training School and Chautauqua, where he later was awarded an honorary LLD degree. Austin worked as an insurance agent for the North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company until 1926. When he founded the militant newspaper, the Carolina Times, he dedicated the paper, whose motto was 'The Truth Unbridled,' to justice and equality for all blacks in the Durham community. Austin's office served as the headquarters for many civil rights efforts in the local community. He was the driving force behind Raymond Hocutt's legal challenge of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's segregation policy. Austin also fought to hire black firemen, policemen, and bus drivers; he crusaded for equal pay for black teachers and paved streets and adequate streetlights in black communities."
