Anthony Austin was born in 1636 in in Bishopstoke, Hamshire, England. He was the son of Richard Austin and wife Betsy. He was brought to New England in 1638 by his parents on the ship the "Bevis"[1] when he was only two years old. He passed away after 1703.
Anthony Austin and his wife Esther were original settlers of Suffield, Massachusetts which was annexed by Connecticut in 1749. In 1674, they were granted 50 prime acres next to Major Pynchos.
Due to King Phillips War in 1675, all land grants were suspended and the area temporarily abandoned. The settlers buried their belongings in the ground or in wells and vacated to Springfield, Massachusetts. Everything the first settlers had built was burnt to the ground by the Indians. In the spring of 1677, the residents returned and rebuilt their town. Capt. Anthony Austin was among the first in a long line of Indian fighters. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1681 and Captain in 1687.
In 1682, Suffield elected a body of five Select Men to take over town responsibilities. This would be the equivalent of a City Council today. A Lieutenant at the time, Anthony was elected the town clerk or recorder. He held the position for 27 years. In 1688 he was elected Commissioner and Town Assessor, and was so until his death in 1694 or 22 August 1708. He also became the schoolmaster of Suffield's first free school.
It is a tribute to the pioneer spirit in the Austin blood stream that his Great-grandson Moses Austin and his Great-Great Grandson Stephen F. Austin were the founders of the first Anglo colony in Texas. It is for them that Austin,Texas bears its name.
After several speculative ventures in the southwest, Moses Austin obtained a large land grant from the Spanish government in 1820 with plans to form the first Anglo colony in Texas. Austin died in May of 1822, his son, Stephen Fuller Austin went to Texas and took possession of his father's land grant and laid out the town of Austin, Texas which was afterward the seat of government. He was the founder of Texas. He was a commander-in-chief of the army and was for a time at the head of affairs in Texas. He died in 1836 in West Columbia, Texas and General Samuel Houston was his successor. Stephen F. Austin never married and had no children. He willed all of his property to his sister, Emily Austin Bryan Perry.
