Moses Austin was born 4 October 1761 in Durham, Middlesex County, Connecticut to Elias and Eunice Phelps Austin.
In December 1797, Austin traveled to Missouri to investigate the Spanish mines there. The following year, the Spanish crown granted one-league (4,428 acres) to Moses. In return he swore allegiance to the Spanish Crown, stated he would settle some families in Missouri[1], and converted to Catholicism shortly afterward[2].
There is a statue of Moses Austin, in front of City Hall, in San Antonio, Texas. A photograph of the statue may be seen as part of the "Road to Republic Tour." http://www.landmarkevents.org/blogs/blog/36913988-texas-tour-recap
