John Atus is a part of US Black heritage.

John Atus was born free in Atusville, Machias, Maine on either 1 August 1797. [1] or 23 September 1797.[2] He was the son of former slave London Atus and Eunice Foss, a woman of English ancestry. [3]

He married before 27 Dec 1819 (birth of daughter, Betsy), Frances "Fanny" Davis. His second wife was Alice Burton "Berta" Sherben, whom he married in Columbia, Maine on 19 Oct 1836. [4] [5]

  3. Mary Jane Atus, b 7 Apr 1827;[6] married at Machias, 20 Jan 1847, Joseph Maxwell.[7]
  4. Henry Atus, b c1829

  3. Olive Atus
  4. Sylvina Atus
  5. Fanny Bailey
  6. William C. Atus,
  7. Ellen Atus
  8. George Atus

He served in the War of 1812. [8]

He died in Atusville on 15 Feb 1889, [9] and is buried in the Court Street Cemetery. [2]
