Ernest T. Attwell was a pioneer of recreation promotion as the director of the National Recreation Association's minority group. He was a former aide to Booker T. Washington, the former business manager of the Tuskegee Institute, the third head football coach of Tuskegee University, and held various roles in the Hoover and Coolidge Administrations.[1]
Ernest Ten Eyck Attwell was born in New York City on 2 March 1877 to Rev. Joseph S. Attwell and Cordelia Jennings.[2] He married Pauline Postell in 1908.[3] They had 2 known children. In 1927, he married Drusilla Elizabeth Tandy.[4] He worked at the Tuskegee Institute from 1907 to 1915 in various roles, including assistant to Booker T. Washington. Ernest also served as the third head football coach at Tuskegee University from 1902 to 1912.[5] He later worked in various roles for the federal government. In 1949, he collapsed and died from an apparent heart attack in Grand Central Station.[1]
