Biography

Biography from Find A Grave:
Elias Atkinson was born October 14, 1819, at Raleigh, North Carolina. His parents came over here from London, England. Queen Victoria Shaw was born January 27, 1854, near Grenada, MS. She and her family moved to TX during the Civil War. She and Elias married August 17, 1873, at Roans Prairie, Houston County.[citation needed] She was 19; he was 54. Brother J.B. Rogers performed the ceremony. To this union were born ten children.
Elias came to TX after he was grown. He bought hundreds of acres of land from twenty-five cents an acre. He had many slaves who lived on his plantation in Houston County near Nevels Prairie.
He was in the Civil War. He helped make ships at Sebastopol on Trinity River. Later he was sent to Valasco on the Gulf to build ships. After the war was over his slaves wanted to continue working on his plantation. He let them stay and paid them wages.
He died November 18, 1890, buried at Antioch cemetery, Nevels Prairie.[1]
Victoria came to Groveton to live with her son Raleigh. Irving and Clint Atkinson were already here and had their families. She lived on what is known now as Devine Street at the corner of 5th street. She lived here until Raleigh married. She moved back to Lovelady and remained there until her death January 27, 1947, on her 93rd birthday.[2]
She was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church. She was very industrious -- grew the cotton, wove the cloth, made the garments by hand for the family. This was an enormous task. She had a large orchard and she dried some of the fruit, canned some, and made jelly. They grewZ˛ sugar cane and made hundreds of gallons of syrup each year. Elias had cattle also.
Victoria's father was Washington Shaw and her mother was Nancy Tollison Harvey, born February 2, 1813. She died August 9, 1903. She was 90 years old. Washington Shaw was born May 29, 1812, died September 4, 1873. They are both buried on the Sherrel Shaw Farm in Houston County.
The Shaws and McKees came to TX in 1860 from MS with 17 wagons in the caravan. They stopped on Saturday and Sunday to rest. They settled in Houston County near Prairie Point and Kittrell. The Shaws came from Ireland and Scotland. Victoria's branch of the Shaws came from Ayrshire, Scotland. Their family motto was "I mean well". Their coat-of-arms has three covered gold cups on a blue shield.

James Atkinson in Marion Co MS did indeed come from Robeson Co but is not the Atkinson family you seek. His father is William Atkinson md Celia ? and brothers John, Benjamin, Elisha, Henry,William who all did go to MS. I looked in my Nash Co records and did not find Susanna. My John married Susanna Purvis d/o Henry Purvis in Robeson Co but I have all their children, all of William, all of Elisha and James family. They were born 1793 thu 1816. William Sr had 2 brothers and a sister. Joseph who md Elizabeth Barnes, John and Lucy who married James Barnes. Their mother is Mary ? who 2nd married John Bell. I have quite a few Atkinsons in Nash Co if you want me to send them. Lets keep in touch as those Robeson families are very familar.

Text: I: sent most of the material to the IGI and Family Search. I currently work in the Family History Library in Pahrump, Nevada which is 50 miles west of Las Vegas. I get to help others learn to build their family trees. I have been reading deeds from Southampton Co Va trying to Identify Joseph, William, John, and Lucy's father. They lived in the vicinity of Blackwater Swamp which was first in Isle of Wight Co and then when the county split it was in Southampton Co. There were 5 Atkinsons emigrated to Virginia from England between 1744 and 1799. I am guessing our line is Thomas who came in 1744, then Thomas his son, but he had so many children in the area, that I can eliminate some, but not enough to matter.. One line is in the DAR The records of early Isle of Wight and Southampton Co are so dim and my eyesight is getting pretty bad so I hope I can prove just who was the relative. The Houston Co. Texas Atkinsons from William and Elias ( sons of William, and brothers of our John) have a family reunion each summer and invite all Atkinsons. My husband has been too ill or not physically able to attend. If you want an address to write to, I will be glad to send it to you. Elias built barges during the Civil War for the Confederacy. He was in Texas at the time. I will keep sending you any thing new that I find. Mary.

Text: Your e mails came thru clear and complete. I see a lot of your facts came from the IGI. Are you a member of the LDS Church? Most of m y information came from census' , Marriage records, cemetary records, wills, probate and deeds. The first few years I neglected to pput source and now I am going back thru notes and adding the information. Nancy, my daughter has been too busy canning peaches and apples to send me the gedcoms so I am trying to send you info. Let me know if it comes thru okay. Incidentally, we visited Lodi, Ms. and were a little astonished. It was a general store that had the Post Office in part of it. It was about 20 x 30 with a wood stove in the center. It had feed for animals in one section with halters, saddles, etc. It had groceries. a cracker and pickle barrel, a round of cheese. It had a round table with 2 men playing checkers. It had been built of green (not dried) lumber and as the 12 inch boards shrank or dried out it left cracks in the floor. It had material for sewing, buttons, lace, calico, etc. It had beer, pop, etc. It had guns, both hand and rifle. The owner was very informative about the area and friendly.
Giles was also called Silas, maybe only by John as he wrote in a letter to his grandson that Silas had visited him, and still wanted to be called Giles instead of Silas.
I may not be adding much to your Atkinsons. Mary Francis married Jesse Morman and was in 1880 census in Sumner Co. Ms with several children. Jesse lived with his parents in Choctaw Co in 1850 census. Wilson had one boy that I know of==Wilson Jr.. I figured John A had died before The second John was born.
I talked with the Atkinsons in Pike Co -- James' descendants and corresponded with the Houston Co. Texas descendants of William and Elias. Benjamin was in the 1860 census living with the Townsends and no trace of him after that. Ms. Archives at Jackson had a folder of Giles with nothing in it but his Confederate Army Co. Thanks so much. Mary . PS. It was interesting that your Mary Alice Atkinson was born in Sep 1927 and That this Mary Alice Atkinson was born a couple of weeks later also Sep 1927.
