Carrie Mae Atkins was born on February 16, 1921 in Knoxville, Tennessee, United States, daughter of Perry Calvin Atkins (1882–1964) and Ada Florence Davis (1886–1977).

Carrie married James Marion Head (born on November 23, 1921 in Georgia).
