ELIZABETH 'Eliza' ATKINS McCARTNEY

ELIZABETH "Eliza" ATKINS was born on October 27th, 1844 at the Township of St. Vincent of Grey County, Ontario. Canada^[1]

"ELIZA" was the daughter of ROBERT ATKINS and ANN TESKEY.

On January 30, 1861, in Grey County, Ontario she married ANDREW McCARTNEY^[2] whose father JOHN McCARTNEY had married Eliza's older sister; CATHERINE ATKINS BONESTEEL.

Death claims one of town’s oldest residents

Meaford--November 3

After living all her life in the township of St. Vincent, Eliza Atkins, widow of the late Andrew McCartney, passed peacefully to rest about 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Robert Patterson, Cape Rich.

The deceased was in town last Saturday with her daughter, apparently in as good of heart as she ever was. In fact, she was heard to remark that she never felt better, the statement causing no surprise as the daughter had never known her mother to be a day ill.

On Saturday evening, however, the deceased was suddenly overcome with a weak spell which deprived her of the proper use of her faculties. She was assisted to her bed and medical aid was summoned, but despite all that could be done for her, she passed away at the time stated, death being due to a cerebral hemorrhage.

The passing of Mrs. McCartney removes one of St. Vincent’s oldest residents. Her parents were Irish, coming to this country and settling on the 9th Line North, St. Vincent when the township was pretty much all brush. It was there the deceased was born and where she spent most of her long and useful life.

Since the death of her husband, six years ago, Mrs. McCartney lived with her daughters, of whom, there are five: Mrs. Robert Patterson, Cape Rich; Mrs. Hannah Ferguson, Hawarden, Saskatchewan; Mrs. J.P. Robinson, Meaford; Mrs. John K Dick, Toronto; and Mrs. Albert Juniper, 7th Line North. One brother, William McCartney, lives on the 9th Line.

The deceased was married to the late Mr. Cartney, when she was 17 years of age, and had the pleasure with him to celebrate their Golden and Diamond Wedding Anniversary.

She was a Disciple in religion, and though quiet and retiring in nature, she nevertheless exerted a most beneficial influence in and beyond the family circle.

The funeral will take place to-day (Saturday) at 1:30pm. Internment in Duxbury’s cemetery.
