Biography
Nathan Appleton is Notable.
Business associate of Daniel Pinckney Parker. Appleton was appalled by working conditions in English mills and sought to create a more progressive workplace without child labor. Scouting a location along the Merrimack river, he was one of the founders of Lowell, Massachusetts name after his distant cousin Francis Cabot Lowell.
Nathan and his group of investors known as The Boston Associates felt some guilt about their accumulated wealth and because of this, the made significant donations to charity. He also felt the call of politics in order to influence the community. After serving 6 terms in the Massachusetts state house, he would serve a term in the 22nd United States Congress.
His residence, just off Boston Common on Beacon Street, was a meeting house for the Women's City Club of Boston. Is has since been subdivided into condominiums and was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1977.
