Biography

New South Wales flag
Joyce (Annetts) Nielsen RN was born in New South Wales, Australia

Joyce Elizabeth Naomi Annetts was born on 15th April 1917 in Sydney's southern suburbs, New South Wales, Australia. She was second daughter of Australian-born parents of English ancestry, Arnold Annetts and Alice Hammond. [1] The family lived in the western suburbs, around Strathfield-Enfield.

She became a Registered Nurse.

Joyce (Annetts) Nielsen RN is a Military Veteran.
Served in the Women's Royal Australian Air Force 1942-1943
No.2 Embarkation Unit

On 21st June 1943 at Strathfield, New South Wales, with the Second World War continuing to menace to Australia's immediate north, Joyce was commissioned in the Women's Royal Australian Air Force. She was posted to the No.2 Embarkation Unit. [2][3]

As Sister Annetts, Joyce married Pilot Officer Bob Nielsen DFM in July 1943 in Sydney's western suburbs, New South Wales. [4] On 22nd October that year, Bob was a member of the crew that famously (or infamously) flew their Avro Lancaster Q-for-Queenie under the eleven year-old Sydney Harbour Bridge whilst on an Australian tour to promote the sale of war loans. [5]

The custom of the day was that service women who married had to leave the service so, on 28th October 1943, Joyce relinquished her commission and once more became a civilian. [2]
