Biography

James was born in 1822. He is the son of James Angus. James married Bridget Smailes of Bulmer, Yorkshire in February 1848.^[1] He was listed as a stone cutter, living in Edinburgh with his wife and daughters Ann^[2] and Christina^[3] in the 1851 census.^[4] In July 1851, James' brother Robert, writing to his brother in law in Canada wrote: "my brother James has lost his daughter Christina that is the one that was born at the time you left this country. She was buried last week they are all well otherwise and he has his best respects to you likewise."^[5]
After Christina's death at thirteen months another girl Christina was born in 1852.^[6] By 1854, when Bridget came along, the family had moved to Glasgow,^[7] where the three girls were joined by a little brother, Robert, in 1857.^[8]
There seems to be no further record for James, as his wife Bridget is listed as head of the household, living with their four children at 213 Main St. in Hutchesontown, Glasgow Govan, in 1861.^[9]
