Robert was born in 1817. He married Janet Whyte in 1839 in Glasgow, listed as a granary keeper at the time.[1]
He was living at 166 Holm St. in Glasgow in 1851, with Janet and a boy, James, 8, and a girl, Janet, aged 9. He was still listed as a grain storekeeper.[2] Shortly after this census was completed, in July 1851, Robert wrote a letter to his wife's brother John in Middleton township, Norfolk County, Canada West. He reports that his wife is "very keen to come to America" but "we must content ourselves hear a little till once we see how things is going to do with us."[3]
The family's planned trip to America never took place. By 1861, it appears that Janet had died, as Robert was living with his two girls at 49 Robertson Street in Glasgow, with a 48 year old housekeeper, Jannet Blair from Port of Monteith in Perth.[4] In the 1871 census, the girls had left home, but son James was staying with Robert and assisting with the grain stores. Robert's sister in law, Bridget, was keeping house and a nephew James (13) and niece Jane (16) were also present.[5]
