Biography

Pouwels Andriesz was a respected resident of Rijswijk, who lived in the 16th century.

Parentage

It is unknown who Pouwels' parents were, although based on the patronymic "Andriesz" we know that the father of Pouwels must have been named Andries.

A brother, Henrick Andryesz, is mentioned living in Zoetermeer in 1597.[1]

He was about 56 years old in 1583, making his birth year about 1527.[2]

Marriage and Offspring

Pouwels Andriesz married Marritgen Arijensdr according to a record from ~1569. Maritgen had already died before the registration. The record mentions six daughters he had with her, listed here from old to young:[3]

His second wife was Pietertgen Jorisdr, widow of Joris Claesz Verspeck.[4] They must have married after 1573, as Joris Claesz Verspeck is still alive in 1573.[5] A record registered on the 8th of May 1576 mentions Pouwels Andriesz and jonge Pouwels Claesz (Verspeck) as heirs of Sebastiaen Claesz (Verspeck).[6] This indicates Pouwels was already married to Pietertgen by then.

Daily Life

Pouwels Andriesz lived in a house in the Noordpolder of Rijswijk according to tax registrations in 1553, 1561, and 1573.[7][8][5]

In 1555 Pouwels did not know how to write.[9]

He filled multiple offcial functions during his life:

  • He was Gezworene (translated:"sworn") of Rijswijk in at least 1552,[10] 1561-1562,[11][12] 1564-1566,[13][14][15] 1575-1577,[16][17][18] 1580,[19] 1581,[20] and 1583.[21]
  • He was Heilige Geestmeester, a church official in charge of the poor relief in the Roman Catholic Church, of Rijswijk in 1563.[22]

Death

A registration made in 1594/1595 mentions the digging of Pouwels Andriesz's grave.[23] A record registered on the 2nd of July 1594 mentions "de laen van Pouwels Andriesz" ("the street of Pouwels Andriesz").[24] Pouwels was still alive in January of 1595.[25] Pouwels is mentioned as deceased on the 7th of June 1595.[26]

This means Pouwels died in 1595, between January and June 7th. He most likely died in Rijswijk, where he was buried. He was about 68 years old at the time.
