Desmond was born in 1920. He was the son of George Andrewes and Mabel Yarborough.
Desmond enlisted in the 2nd World War on 2 June 1941. He was aged 20 and working as a Storekeeper, farmer and University Student at the time of enlistment.

King's College School Cadets; New Zealand Army, 4 Field Battery Territorials; North Auckland Mounted Rifles; Royal New Zealand Air Force, attached Royal Canadian Air Force; 7 Air Observer School (AOS) Portage La Prairie, Manitoba Canada; Royal Air Force 622 Squadron Bomber Command; Royal Air Force Transport Command 242 Squadron.
Desmond was awarded the following Medals and Awards:
His brother, Lancelot George Andrewes (413802) also served with the RNZAF in World War Two.
Desmond married Joyce Mildred Winter and they had 6 children.
He passed away in 2014 at the age of 93.
