January 1918 : No section of the regatta [2] attracts more attention or is more closely followed, both by the juveniles and the older generation, than the swimming races and the amusements attached hereto; . . . Amongst these should be first mentioned the aquaplaning, which was so successful a novelty last year, and which promises to develop into one of the features of the regatta. . Miss Emmie Pilkington (11), and Master Max Andrewartha (13), behind the Gretna and under the guidance of Mr. G. Murray Williams, also performed most creditably, the young lady's courage and carriage in steering through the waves caused by the aquaplane being alike commendable.
