Biography

Desmond Amofah is Notable.

Desmond Daniel Amofah , better known as Etika, was an American YouTuber and online streamer.

Amofah was born on May 12, 1990 in Brooklyn, New York, and was the son of Ghanaian politician Emmanuel Owuraku Amofah and his wife Sabrina. He had two siblings: an older brother, Randy, who died on October 31, 2010, and a younger brother.[1] His grandmother passed away on November 16, 2007.[2]

Originally active as a model,[3] (and semi-active as one until 2015)[4] Amofah was better known online by the name Etika after 2012, where he posted videos or live streamed reactions to various Nintendo products, games, and announcements. His original YouTube channel (which had amassed around 800,000 subscribers) and Twitch channel were both eventually closed, after violating terms of service.[5] [6]

Toward the end of 2018 and beginning of 2019, Amofah began to show signs of mental instability, and tweeted in April of 2019 that he was going to kill himself, which led to his arrest and hospitalization, from which he was released.[7] He was detained a few days later for another mental episode.[8] After posting a video titled "I'm sorry" to his backup YouTube channel, TR1Iceman, he passed away after committing suicide by jumping from the Manhattan Bridge into the East River sometime between June 19 and June 22, 2019. He was found by the NYPD near Pier 16.[9] Reactions poured in from online after the news was released, and a petition was created asking YouTube to restore his original channel to preserve his legacy.[10]
