Biography

Nothing is known of the ancestry of Ruth Ames. Based on the date of her marriage, 1797 is a reasonable estimate for her birth date. See the Research Note below.

On 4 Sep 1817, the town clerk of Livermore, Maine (then in Massachusetts), certified that "an intention of marriage between Mr. Levi Gould of Livermore and Miss Ruth Ames of Lewiston hath ben [sic] entered with me fourteen days prior to the date hearof [sic] and hath ben [sic] published in the Town of Livermore as the Law directs."^[1]

Research Note

Ruth's husband Levi died in October 1818.^[2] No further record has been found of Ruth; it is likely that she remarried. The gravestone of a "Ruth Ames, wife of Rufus Gould" at the Knapp Cemetery in Leeds, Maine, says that she was born in Lewiston on 1 Feb 1796,^[3] and given the birth date and birthplace, it is possible that this is the Ruth Ames who married, as a first husband, Levi Gould.
