Biography

• According to Spanish naming customs, Luis's family name was actually Fernandez. That was his fathers family name. Alvarez was his mothers family name.

• Luis's father was called Eugenio Fernandez. Both of Luis's parents died by the time he was 8 years old. When he was 13, one of his brothers (possibly Mariano) took Luis to Cuba where he recived an education and learned to speak fluent English.

• When Luis moved to the USA, the English language custom was to use the last name as his family name so he ended up being called Luis Alvarez, which technically is his mothers family name. The rest of the family and descendents, by default, have also adopted Alvarez as their family name.

• In most USA census records the name of Luis is either spelled Luis or Louis - probably because that is how the city of St Louis is spelled and pronounced (Lewis). It is not pronounced the french way (loo-eee)

• Luis also lived in Hawaii Territory for a number of years. 3 of his children were born in Hawaii while he was working as a physician for the Hawaiian government.
