Ora Denise Allen, known by the stage name Denise LaSalle, was an American blues, R&B and soul singer, songwriter, and record producer who, since the death of Koko Taylor, had been recognized as the "Queen of the Blues".
Ora Denise Allen was born on July 16, 1939 in Leflore County, Mississippi to Nathaniel A. Allen Sr. and Nancy Cooper. She was the youngest of eight children in the family. She was raised in Belzoni, Mississippi and sang in church choirs for local gospel groups around Leflore County. At age 13, she moved to Chicago to live with her oldest brother, and signed a recording contract with Chess Records.
Denise is honored on a historical marker in Belzoni, Mississippi as part of the Mississippi Blues Trail. [1]
