Biography

Martha Lavonia Allen was born to Coleman Anderson Allen and Nancy Rosannah Harris on July 6, 1855 in Alabama. [1] While she was in the home, her family lived in Randolph and Tallapoosa counties in Alabama. [2] [3] She married John EdmonFargason on November 14, 1877 in Tallapoosa County. [4] They were listed on the 1880 Census as being in Clay County [5] probably in Emuckfaw. Their first three children were born in Emuckfaw starting July 23, 1880. Between 1885 and 1889 the family moved to Wadley in Randolph County where their last two children were born. The 1900 Census found the family in Daviston, Tallapoosa County. [6] After that, they headed west for Texas. They stopped for a bit in East Texas and made it to the Hermleigh area of Scurry County by 1909. She lived the rest of her life there, passing away on March 11, 1937 and was buried in the Hermleigh Cemetery. [7] [8] [9] [1]

Obituary

Pioneer Woman of Hermleigh Is Victim of Death

Mrs. J.E. Fargason, 81, wife of a pioneer Hermleigh merchant, died at the family residence in Hermleigh last Thursday, following a 10-days illness. She was the mother of Warren C. Fargason, Hermleigh postmaster, Leonard R. and John Luther Fargason, Hermleigh merchants, and of two daughters, Mrs. Nettie Starnes and Mrs. Della Crumley of Snyder. Her husband, retired, also survives. Mr. and Mrs. Fargason had resided in the Hermeigh vicinity 28 years.

Final rites were held Friday afternoon, 3:00 o'clock at the First Baptist Church, Hermleigh, and burial followed in the Hermleigh cemetery, with Odom Funeral Home in charge. Officiating ministers were Rev. R.H. Montgomery of Sweetwater, pastor of the church of which Mrs. Fargason was a long-time member; Rev. C.E. Leslie of Hermleigh, Rev. G.W. Parks of Roscoe and Rev. H.C. Gordon of Snyder.

Active pallbearers were: Melvin Vernon, Mitchell McMath, Loren McMillan, Dave Houston, Truett Simmons and Fred Isom. The following were honorary pallbearers: John Bowen, Ben Caswell, Jack Mahoney, E.R. Jones, Dr. W.H. Ward, A.W. Mobley and O.J. Isom.

Mmes. Tressie Longbotham, Walter Gilmore and Vinita Vaughan and Miss Cora Beth Mahoney were in charge of floral offerings.
