Biography

Frances Duff Allan (1858-1932), known as Fanny, was born in Everton, Liverpool on the 7th August 1858 ^[1] and christened on the 17th October 1858 at St Peter's church in Liverpool. She was the daughter of William Allan, who was a mariner at that time, and Jessie Halket. ^[2]

The family were living in Kirkdale, Liverpool in 1861 with her maternal grandfather & aunt and it is unclear if the William Allan shown lodging there is her father or a coincidentally similarly named person as both he and her mother are listed as widowed and certainly her mother shortly thereafter settled with another man and starts another family by him. ^[3] In 1871 she is with her mother, now named Macdonald, & stepsiblings in Brisbane Street, Kirkdale. Her stepfather is absent and described as a ship steward so likely away working. ^[4]

In the 1881 census I strongly suspect that she is the same Fanny Allen who was employed as a waitress, living in Golden Court in the Bull Ring, Birmingham. ^[5]

Certainly Fanny was living at the Bull Ring, Birmingham on 13th November 1881 when she married Alfred Hands at St Philip's church in Birmingham. ^{[6] [7]}

Their first daughter, Amy, died in infancy and when their second child, Arthur, was born in 1884, they were living in Balsall Heath, Birmingham ^[8]

They moved back to Liverpool by the time their next child is born in 1886 and initially live on Lambert Street, ^[9] moving via Fitzroy Street, West Derby in 1888, to Tudor Street, West Derby in 1891 ^[11] where they stay for over a decade adding another son, Albert, in 1894 ^{[10] [12]}

Her husband died in late 1901 and 2 years later she remarried to Ernest Griffiths in Liverpool ^[13] and in 1911 they are living on Wellington Road, Toxteth Park with 2 of her sons. ^[14]

She did not appear to have any children with Ernest. He died in 1928 and Fanny died in December 1932 at Poplar Grove, Toxteth Park. ^[15] She was buried in Allerton Cemetery in south Liverpool on the 30th December 1932. ^[16]
