Biography

Birth

No record has been found of the birth of Henry Aldrich. He was probably born about 1785, possibly at Uxbridge, Massachusetts or Richmond, New Hampshire; see the Research Note below. He was a son of Henry Aldrich of Richmond and Livermore.

Marriage

Henry Aldrich of Livermore, Maine (then in Massachusetts) and Nancy Standly of Swanzey, New Hampshire, published their intention to marry at Livermore on 10 Oct 1806.[1] (The 1874 history of Livermore gives her name as Nancy Stanley and says she was from Swansey, New Hampshire.[2]) They were married at Swanzey on 11 Dec 1806.[3]

Residences and Career

Henry Aldrich was in the area of Livermore, Maine, known as Brettun's Mills by the date of his marriage intention in November 1806,[1] and he was at Livermore as late as 1827, when he served on a commitee as a member of the Universalist church.[4] He was a manufacturer of scythe sneaths (shafts),[2] and he developed a new patented threshing machine.[5] At some point, he moved to Long Island, where he died in 1848.[2]

Children

Henry and Nancy (Stanley) Aldrich, had the following children all born at Livermore, Maine (then in Massachusetts). The first three are recorded in the Livermore vital records, with the birth dates shown.[6] The 1874 history of Livermore has different dates for their births, and it includes Elizabeth, Daniel, and Nancy, who are not shown in the vital records.[2] (The Livermore vital records have incomplete lists of children for many families.)
  1. Elias Aldrich, born on 30 Nov 1807
  2. Abner Aldrich, born on 17 Sep 1809
  3. Angela Aldrich, born on 5 May 1811
  4. Elizabeth Aldrich
  5. Daniel Aldrich, born in 1817
  6. Nancy Aldrich, born in 1819

Death

Henry passed away on 15 Nov 1846 in Newtown, Queens, New York.[7][2] A FindAGrave memorial says that he died in December 1846 and that he was buried at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, Kings, New York. The memorial has a photo of a large monument, but the text on the monument cannot be read from the photo.[8]

Probate

Henry Aldrich executed his will on 13 Dec 1844. His will was proved by Sarah (Bailey) Aldrich on 12 Aug 1852 at the Queens County Surrogate Court in Jamaica, New York. Henry left the following heirs at law:[7]
  1. Nancy Aldrich, his widow, resident of Newtown, Queens, NY
  2. Angela S. Latham, his widowed daughter, resident of Newtown, Queens, NY
  3. Daniel C. Aldrich, his son, resident of Mobile, Mobile, Alabama.
  4. William Henry Cutts, grandson, child of his deceased daughter, Elizabeth (Aldrich) Cutts
  5. Boadicea Cutts, granddaughter, child of his deceased daughter, Elizabeth (Aldrich) Cutts
  6. Underhill Covert, grandson, child of his deceased daughter, Nancy L. (Aldrich) Covert, resident of Newtown, Queens, New York
  7. Henry Covert, grandson, child of his deceased daughter, Nancy L. (Aldrich) Covert, resident of Newtown, Queens, New York
  8. Alfred S. Aldrich, grandson, child of his deceased son, Abner S. Aldrich, resident of Livermore, Oxford, Maine
  9. Abner C. Aldrich, grandson, child of his deceased son, Abner S. Aldrich, resident of Livermore, Oxford, Maine
  10. Sarah A. Aldrich, granddaughter, child of his deceased son, Abner S. Aldrich, resident of Livermore, Oxford, Maine
  11. Thomas B. Aldrich, grandson, child of his deceased son, Elias T. Aldrich

Research Note

According to the 1874 history of Livermore, Maine, Henry Aldrich came to Livermore (then in Massachusetts) in 1808 from Uxbridge, Massachusetts, and he was a relative of Seth Ballou of Livermore.[2] The Livermore vital records, however, show he was at Livermore by November 1806, when he was called of Livermore in his marriage intention.[1] There are many entries for members of the Aldrich family at Uxbridge, but none for Henry. An unsourced Ancestry.com profile says that he was born at Richmond, New Hampshire, in 1771 and was the son of Henry Aldrich and Elizabeth (Hunt) Aldrich.[9] No evidence has been found to support this claim, and the 1830 census records his age as 40 to 50 years old,[10] which places his birth date at between 1780 and 1790. Given that evidence and the date of his marriage, 1785 is a reasonable estimate for his birth. (Bloom-1124 23:49, 29 November 2019 (UTC))

Aldrich-2369 and Aldrich-1266 appear to represent the same person because: Same spouse

Completed merge, I've got Aldriches (but probably not these ones) in my tree so it caught my eye. Had to merge into the older profile 1266 which was just a gedcom import with no sources or profile manager.
