Biography

Samuel was the son of John Aldersey and Anne Lowe. [1] When and where he was born is not clear, see research note below.

Samuel Aldersey was a member of the Company of Merchants Adventurers who were involved in the cloth trade.

‘’The Merchant Adventurers were an incorporated society of merchants who had been granted a monopoly on the export of undyed woollen cloth to any point on the coast of Northern Europe between the Somme and Skaw (present day Denmark)’’[2]

He worked in Stade in 1604, 1606 & 1607 trading both on his own account and also for others. "He journeyed to Nuremberg in 1604 and 1607 to sell kerseys [rolls of rough cloth]. … [and] relocated to Hamburg in 1611. ...[He was a] “highly respected person within the English Court, for he was one of the four representatives of the Adventurers … who concluded the agreement with Delft in 1621 on the establishment of the Netherlands mart there. He, along with a few other families and offspring, was one of those belonging to Hamburg Court families”[3]

Samuel married twice:

  1. Marie van Oyrl/Oyel/Vanoyrll the daughter of Phillipp Vanoyrll of Nuringberge in Germanye[sic] before he returned from Nuremberg to London.[4] [5] Mary [Marie] died in 1627 and was buried on 3 July 1627 in St Stephen, Coleman Street, City of London, London, England.[6]
  2. Mrs Margaret Eliat, a widow, on 30 March 1630 in St Andrew's, Enfield, Middlesex, England.[7]

Samuel and his first wife, Marie, had five children: [8] [9] [10]

  1. John Aldersey, born in Germany.[9] [8] [5]
  2. Marie Aldersey, born in Germany.[9] [8] [5]
  3. Anne Aldersey born circa 1613 in Germany, who married Robert Eyre, Gent by licence on 18 March 1631 in the parish church of St Antholin’s, London.[9] [5] [8] [11]
  4. Elizabeth Aldersey, born in Germany.[9] [5] [8]
  5. Margarett Aldersey, born circa 1617 in Germany, who married Thomas Blechynden, Prebendary of Christ Church, Canterbury in 1635 after her father's death.[9] [5] [8][12]

All five children were born while they were living overseas in Germany and in 1628 they all became naturalised English citizens by an act of parliament.[9] The final notice gave quite a few details about the family when it finally passed the Lords on 25 June 1628.

"John Aldersery, Marie Aldersey, now the wife of Robert Crane, Anne Aldersey, Elizabeth Aldersey, Margaret Aldersey, born in Germany, children of Samuell Aldersy, of the Cittie of London, Esq., and Marie, his late wife, daughter of Phillipp Vanoyrll of ye Cittie of Nuringberge in Germanye." [5]

After returning to England Samuel settled in the parish of St Stephen’s, Coleman Street, where there were many prominent Puritans.[4] He became “a prominent Puritan who contributed to the Impropriations Fund in 1626 and was probably an active worker for St Antholin’s Feoffees as his brother-in-law, Charles offspring, was rector of that Church.” [13]

“Samuel Aldersey was also one of the three founding members of the Massachusetts Bay Company which was formed in 1628 as a joint stock venture to trade in the fish and furs of New England but leading members of the company also wanted to use it to promote the founding of a Puritan religious commonwealth.”[14] He was was appointed an Assistant by the Charter [of the Massachusetts Bay Company] and subsequently chosen by the company. He subscribed liberally to the loan, and also for the purchase of the Arbella, and was one of the ten undertakers to whom the management of the company was committed. He did not leave England[15]

Samuel was buried under the alter of the parish Church of St Stephen Coleman Street in London in July 1633.[16]

“In the Chancel lies buried the Body of Mr. Samuel Aldersey, Merchant, Citizen and Haberdasher of London, July 25, 1633. His Atcheivements and Ensigns proper to his Name and Estate, hang over him.” [17]

Research Notes

Possible birth date - although no birth date has been given Samuel has been included in the Pedigree under his father in 1613 which reveals he was born before 1613 even though no date has been included for his birth. He is listed as the sone of John Aldersey of London marchant and Anne, daughter to Simon Looe [Lowe] of London, merchant.[1]Williamson-862 11:43, 9 August 2022 (UTC) Based on Samuel’s known work history we know he was in Stade in 1604, 1606 & 1607 so he would have been at least? 21? Years of age in 1604 therefore possibly born circa 1583. One possibility is Samuel, son of Aldersey, was baptised on 16 May 1581 on St Lawrence Jewry with St Mary Magdalene Milk Street, London, England.[18] However looking at other Aldersey baptisms in the surrounding years in that parish, the names don't seem to match the known siblings of Samuel.

Lineage - His father John ... a merchant in London, .. was left heir to his uncle Thomas, the founder of Bunbury School. Samuel was the eldest surviving son, Samuel, also a merchant ... [19]

Marriages -

  • Samuel's first marriage was in the Netherlands and has not yet been identified.[4] HIs first wife's brothers were mentioned in Samuel's Will as his brother-in-laws Sidurh and Job Van Oyrl.[8] He and his wife had their children abroad before the family eventually settled in England.[9]
  • Samuel's second marriage was after the death of his first wife, his second wife is named in his Will and in his daughter's Margaret Aldersey marriage in 1635 where she is identified as her mother in law Margaret Aldersey.[6] [7] [8] [12]

Probate - Samuelis Aldersley wrote a Will on 1 January 1633 which was probated 13 July 1633.[8] [20] In the Will Samuel identified himself as Citizen and Haberdasher of London who has has five children, but only one son. Amongst the people identified in his Will were the following relatives:

  • beloved wife Margarett Aldersley
  • his son John Aldersley
  • his daughter Marie [although he does not mention her directly her husband is identified as my son-in-law Robert Crane]
  • his brother Fraunces Webb and my Sister his wife
  • his brothers in lawe Didrich and Jobst Van Oyrl
  • his dearest mother [although he gives her no identifying name]
  • Mrs Judith Elliot my wives daughter

He also mentioned his dwelling house is at "Endfeild" (probably Enfield).
