Sir John Aird, 1st Baronet (3 December 1833 – 6 January 1911) was a notable English civil engineering contractor of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He also served as Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) for Paddington North from 1887 to 1906, was the first Mayor of Paddington in 1900, and became an enthusiastic collector of British art.[1] He served as one of the Lieutenants of the City of London.[2]
John was born on 5 December 1833[3], the son of John Aird of County Ross[2] and his wife Agnes. John was baptised in Southwark on 14 May 1834 at St George The Martyr.[3]
In 1855 John married Sarah Smith, the daughter of Benjamin Smith of Deptford, Kent.[2]
In 1890 John was said to be residing at 14 Hyde Park Terrace, London and at East Sutton Park in Staplehurst, Kent. He was said to be a member of the Carlton, Junior Carlton, City Carlton, Constitutional, National Conservative, St Stephen's and Grafton Clubs.[2]
John was created a baronet on 5 March 1901 on the recommendation of Lord Sainsbury.
