Obituaries. - 8 Dec 1917 Mr. William Aird. - The death is announced of Mr. William Aird, of Russell street, Woodville, in his 78th year. He was the fourth and only surviving son of the late Mr. John Aird, the head of the firm of Messrs. John Aird & Sons, contractors, of London, and brother of the late Sir John Aird, who constructed the Nile Dam. Born on June 1, 1840, in Kent, England, the deceased was educated at a private school, and afterwards with a tutor at Haarlem (Holland), and at Amsterdam, then in Berlin and Copenhagen, where large contracts were being carried out by his father's firm. He then went to Scotland to gain a knowledge of farming, and on his 21st birthday his father put him into possession of the Cage Farm, Tunbridge, Kent, where hops were grown extensively. He also had a valuable herd of Sussex cattle, After nine years at Tunbridge, be took a trip to Australia, where he met and married Miss Blanche Stock (sister of the late Messrs. R. A. and W. F. Stock). He returned at once to England, but after the death of his father, having taken a share in the latter's estate, Mr. Aird brought his wife and children out to Australia. At the "boom" time, he was tempted, like others, to speculate in shares, and took up mining in the Mount Pleasant district, the old German Reef, Crown Mine, and others. He met great disappointments, and soon afterwards his health failed. He lived in retirement at Woodville for some years, and floriculture claimed his leisure. He as left two sons -Mr. W. D'Arcy Aird (chief Clerk, Harbour Board, Port Adelaide), Mr PJohn Aird, of the Bank of New South Wales, who left Sydney with the 30th Battalion - and three daughters, the Misses Edith, Florence, and Ros Aird.
