Jerry Montague Agnew was born on November 10, 1888, in Alma, Arkansas, to Jeremiah Jerry C Agnew and Betty Parker. He was the eldest of five children and grew up in Fort Smith and Van Buren, Arkansas. He married Mary Dorothy Knight on July 21, 1912, and they had four children: Jerry Montague Jr., Sarah A., Mayme, and Mary Louise. He owned and operated a general store in Van Buren, the only black-owned business in the city. He was also the father of Mayme Agnew Clayton, a librarian and founder of the Western States Black Research and Education Center, a collection of African-American historical materials. He died on April 25, 1954, in Los Angeles, California, and was buried in Carson, California.
