Biography

John Addis was born in Gloucestershire, England.

John was born in 1833 and was baptized on 26th October 1833 at Olveston, Gloucestershire.^[1][2] He was the son of James Addis and his wife Sarah Smith.

He first appears on the 1841 census living with his parents ^[3][4]in Olveston, Gloucestershire. His parents are James Addis (45, Mason), Sarah (35); and John (8) is listed with his siblings, Daniel (11), Henry (9), Benjamin (6), and Edwin (6 months) all born in Gloucestershire.^[5]

The 1851 census lists John Addis as a 17 year old, unmarried mason, living in Cromhall, Gloucestershire.^[6]

John 21, a mason of High Street, Olveston (son of James Addis, a mason) married Ruth Hall, 30, nurse of The Lawn, Olveston (daughter of John Hall, an engineer) on 3rd December 1853 at Swinden in Wiltshire.^[7]

Sometime between John’s marriage to Ruth in 1853 and the birth of their 1st child in 1854, John and Ruth emmigrated to Australia.

• Their daughter Mary Eliza is born in Boronia, Victoria in 1854, sadly she died in 1855 and her death is recorded in Boronia, Victoria aged 6 months.
• Their 2nd child Harry Hall Addis was born at Warrenheip, Victoria in 1856. He died aged 63 in Bairnsdale, Victoria in 1919.
• Their son John was born in 1858, Ballarat, Victoria but passed away the same year aged 2 months.
• In 1859 they had another son James but he was born in Ballarat, Victoria and died the same year also.
• In 1860 twins were born in Ararat, Victoria, another son whom they again called John who died the same year and a daughter Ruth sadly she also passed away the same year.
• John’s wife Ruth passed away in 1862 aged 39, probably in childbirth with the birth of another son named John leaving John with 6 year old Harry and the baby John who died aged 2 months to look after.

Six years later, John married for a 2nd time on 3rd June 1868 at Ballarat, Victoria to Charlotte Louisa Bendall, who was born in Uley, Gloucestershire in 1836. The marriage was registered in Victoria as John Addis and Charlotte Louisa Gharlize, ^[8] as well as her family name of Bendall on the same registration number so she must have been previously married.^[9]

They had 3 children:-

• Alice 1868-1901
• Letitia 1868-1942 and
• Edith Louisa 1871-1872.

Charlotte passed away in 1871 possibly from complications of the birth of their last child.

John married for the third time to Elizabeth Palmer in 1871 ^[10] and they went on to have a further 6 children:-

• Clara Elizabeth 1872-1874
• John Palmer 1874-1940
• Florence 1875-1919
• George 1878
• Edith Elizabeth 1880-1933, and
• William James 1884-1895.

John Addis died on 19th June 1904 at Ipoh Straits Settlements, Malaysia. His death is recorded on the gravestone of his father James at St Mary’s Church in Olveston, Gloucestershire.^[11]
