Robert Newton Adams was an American clergyman and soldier. Adams was a Colonel in the Union Army during the Civil War. Colonel Adams commanded the 81st Regiment, Ohio Infantry. Adams was a Brevet Brigadier General.
Robert was born on September 15, 1835. He was the son of Albert Adams and Nancy Verdie (Coffey) Adams. [1][2]
In 1858, Admas entered Miami University (Ohio). [3][4]
In 1861, after graduation from Miami University, Adams enlisted in the "University Rifles" (Company C), 20th Regiment, Ohio Infantry. [3][4] The term of service was 3 months. After his term expired, Adams organized a company and was made Captain. His company joined the 81st Regiment, Ohio Infantry. In May 1862, Adams was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. In August 1864, Adams was promoted to Colonel in command of the 81st Regiment. [4][3]
Adams saw combat in the battles of Shiloh, Corinth, Town Creek, Resaca, Dallas, Kennesaw Mountain, Nickajack Creek, Atlanta, Jonesborough, and Hobkirk's Hill. [3][2] Adams was wounded at the Battle of Jonesborough. [4]
In May 1865, Adams received a promotion to Brevet Brigadier General with rank dating from March 13, 1865. [4] On July 13, 1865, Adams mustered out of service. [3]
After the War, Adams studied at the Allegheny Theological Seminary. From 1869 to 1875, Adams was a pastor in Ohio and Kansas. [3][2] Adams moved to Minnesota. In 1866, Adams became the Superintendent of Home Missions. That was a position he would hold for 21 years. [2]
Robert Newton Adams passed away on March 25, 1914. He was buried at Lakewood Cemetery, Minneapolis, Minnesota. [1][2][3]
