John Hurst Adams, a college president who became an American civil rights activist, was also a bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.[1]

John Hurst Adams, a son of Eugene Adams and Charity Nash, was born on November 27, 1927 in Columbia, South Carolina. He grew up in Columbia, where he attended Booker T. Washington High School.[2][3][4][1]

John was a freshman at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina when he registered for the World War II draft,.[5] He earned his B.A. degree in history in 1947. He entered the Boston University School of Theology, earning bachelor's and master's degrees in sacred theology. He also studied at Harvard University and at Union Theological Seminary in New York City.[2]

John married Dolly Jacqueline Desselle, daughter of Moses Desselle and Thelma (Tucker) Smith, in New Orleans in August of 1956.[6][7] They had three children.

In 1956 he also became president of Paul Quinn College in Waco, Texas. There he was a target of the Ku Klux Klan.[8] He served as pastor at First A.M.E. Church in Seattle during the 1960s civil rights movement, and served at Grant A.M.E. Church in Los Angeles, California. In 1972 he was elected the 87th Bishop of the A.M.E. Church. In 1988 he was made Senior Bishop of the A.M.E. Church, and served until his retirement in 2005. After he retired, he became a professor at Emory University in Atlanta.
