John B Adams was born into slavery in South Carolina.[1] When freed he came to California and was trained in horticulture on Lucky Baldwin's ranch in Los Angeles. In 1873 Adams budded the first Washington navel orange tree, which effectively started the citrus industry in California today.[2]
According to granddaughters, his name during slavery was 'Hicks Bundy'. [3]
John married Adaline Adams about 1880.
Son Elliott , born in 1884, married Zenner Bruce in Los Angeles, California.[4]
