Daisy Elizabeth Adams was a suffragist, and a civil rights and political activist.
Daisy Elizabeth Adams was born circa 1884 in Washington, District of Columbia and spent her youth in Reading, Pennsylvania. [1]
In 1900, 16-year-old Daisy was living with her mother Rosa, and her step-father, John H Temple on Walnut Street in Reading, Pennsylvania. Both her parents were employed as cooks and the census cites Daisy as being a housekeeper.[2] Daisy's mother would die in 1909, perhaps precipitating her to leave home and move to Pittsburgh where she worked as a manicurist. In 1910 she was a lodger in the home of Nelson Scott on Collins Avenue in Pennsylvania.[3]
Daisy married William Lampkin, about 1912[4]. They would live on Webster Avenue for the duration of their marriage.By that time, Daisy was hosting local suffragette meetings at her home. She joined the New Negro Women's Equal Franchise Federation, which would later be renamed the Lucy Stone League and would be elected president in 1915. Lampkin’s early career as a suffragette included assembling street-corner speeches and organizing other Black housewives to actively engage in consumer groups.[5]
It was also during this time that Lampkin joined the national framework of the black women's club movement. She was a shareholder and Vice President of The PIttsburgh Courier, and used her position at the newspaper to further social justice causes.
Lampkin’s work with the National Association of Colored Women (NACW) and other organizations led her to be appointed to the posts of NAACP regional field secretary in 1930 and national field secretary in 1935. The 1930 Census shows William and Daisy living on Webster Avenue. William was working as a chef in a club and Daisy is cited as field secretary for the NAACP.[6]
In 1945, the NAACP named Lampkin the “NAACP Woman of the Year” . Due to health concerns she resigned as field secretary in 1947 but would serve as a director until 1964.
Elenore Roosevelt honored Lampkin with the Mary Mcleod Bethune World Citizenship Award in 1964.
Daisy died at her home on Webster Avenue in Philadelphia on March 10, 1965 at the age of 76. Formerly an executive, she was survived by her husband, William Lampkin. She was born August 9, 1888 in Pennsylvania to George Adams and Rose Proctor. The informant was her husband, William Lampkin of the same address. She was buried at Homewood Cemetery on March 15.[7]
In 1983, a Pennsylvania Historical Marker was placed at her Webster Ave. apartment building in Pittsburgh. [1]
