subject Adams information
Howard... I am not sure if I have updated you on the problems I've encountered regarding affiliating with DAR through Thomas Nott via the Roxanna Nott Adams connection. The staff genealogist at DAR will not accept the overwhelming circumstantial evidence, has conceded that Roxanna is a Nott and that she is the age and sex of the child in the Samuel Nott-Amy Van Clief household, but wants a document stating legally that she is their daughter. A courthouse that held those records in Ohio may have been the one that burned. The records in Linn County, Iowa that held death and estate records of the period were flooded and destroyed in the Iowa floods of last summer. Am I jinxed?
-----------
We are switching our DAR/SAR application to go through Joel Winfield Scott Adams through Major and then Joel. All the Rev. War experiences are in order...muster roll of both he and Joel Sr., pension application with an explanation, and pay roll...so we think that will go through. Joel Adams has never been used before as a patriot.
I have three land transactions from Joel and Volney Adams and other Adams that list Joel Adams as an "heir" in land purchases in Washington County, Ohio.
However, I don't want to re-file until I locate something that specifically states Major is the son of Joel.
My mother had a note that Joel's estate administrator was Dennis Adams, a brother. She also had a note that she received Butterfield-Adams information from Hessie Grim .... wife of Harry Butterfield (1904-1968). Would you have any access to any documents?
-----------
I've contacted Washington County Historical Library and a young man there is quite interested. Would you believe he is a descendant of Thomas Nott and also is familiar with the Adams line? His SAR affiliation is through another line than Roxanna's. He may be able to help with that lineage. Once I have the DAR membership, I will certainly share the number to shorten the process for others in the line.
-----------
Another question........ I know you have extensive material on the Butterfield line and I enjoy going into your website. When I am certain I will no longer need material from my mother's material, I am going to share it with others. Tom Risinger will receive the Walton information. Would you like the Butterfield? I should also have pictures.
-----------
My children are all very interested, but will not be pursuing information from those lines other than the information I have put into Family Tree Maker...basically through my 1st cousins. Between Don and myself we have nine family lines that I have traced. I need another lifetime to do all I want to do to seal this information for my heirs. At 74+.... I am trying to hurry...LOL!
-----------
Tom said a Butterfield contacted him about DAR affiliation. If you know that person, please refer them to me. I'll help all I can.

DEATH: J W. S. Adams Called to Rest
The community of Creighton was saddened to learn of the death of J W. S. Adams, which occurred at his home on Tuesday evening at 7:23 p.m. Mr. Adams has been ill for about eight months, following a stroke of paralysis, and he has never been able to leave the bed since this attack came on, and steadly became weaker until the end came. The deceased was one of our early settlers and went through a great many hardships of the pioneer days.
Mr. Adams was a friendly and honorable man and was widely known in this vicinity, where he has lived a great number of years. He was among the oldest Masons in Nebraska, and had he lived until May would have been a member of that fraternal organization for fifty years.
Besides his widow he leaves to mourn four sons and five daughters by his first wife and, one daughter by his second marriage.
The funeral will be held this Thursday morning at 9 o'clock from the home in charge of the Creighton Masonic lodge, conducted by Rev. DeBenham of Spencer, Nebraska, and the remains will be taken to Enterprise, Nebraska, a settlement west of Creighton, Mr. Adams' old home where burial will be made.
The News extends condolences to the bereaved relatives in their hour of grief.
Complete obituary next week.
----------------------------
DEATH: Joel Winfield Scott Adams
Under the blue canopy of heaven, amid the scenes of many years' labor, and surrounded by frends [sic] and loved ones the body of Mr. Adams rested on its last journey to the silent city Wednesday noon, April 23rd, while the last words were spoken by the writer who had been privileged to labor with him in bygone days, and had enjoyed his fellowship many times the lasr few years. The deceased with his wife and five children journeyed overland from Iowa forty-four years ago this summer. Two covered wagons held their wordly [sic] goods and for twenty-five days the family traveled to reach the new home at Enterprise, Nebraska.
One can in a measure visualize the---"long, long trail awinding" between the old home and the new. The slow moving teams measuring the miles. The camp pitched at night beside a stream and sheltering trees, or enjoying the hospitality of friendly folks who had braved such an experience, and knew the hardships of the road. The last night ere [sic] the homestead was reached they camped four miles east of Creighton with Mr and Mrs. Chas. Smith who had located there three months before. Strangers as they were then to each other one can imagine how the hours were spent. What hopes, yes, and fears those men and women must have known as they faced the unknown future. Here was pioneering indeed, and only brave souls would have dared venture into the new country.
The new home was established and many years sprnt in labor common to all of that generation. Others followed them and soon a thriving community grew in the locality they had chosen. Here with their neighbors they established and erected school buildings, and religious privileges must also be maintained. It is in connection with the latter the writer first came in touch with Mr. Adams, who gave his time and talents in the work of the Sunday School and the United Brethren church organized in the building that stood on his farm. Aman of rugged physical strength, warhearted and gential, ever ready to lend a hand was Scott, as he was familiarly known. What memories linger and are recalled with gladness by those who knew him best.
He was born March 5th, 1848, at Mariatta, Ohio, and died April 21, 1925, at aged 77 years. HE married Martha E. Fee at Sims County, Ia., April 6, 1869. Eleven children were born to this union, two dying in infancy. Mrs Adams died in 1894 at Venus, Nebraska.
He was married to Mrs. Nellie Smith, Febr. 6th 1901, to whom one child was born. The family with the exception of one son were with him at the last, though he was unable to recognize them for some hours prior his death. At the funeral service all the children were present as follows: Mrs. Ella Brookhouser, Orchard, Nebr., Mrs. Belle Walton, Niobrara, Nebr.; Mrs. Ada Butterfield, Walnut, Nebr.; Mrs Rebecca Butterfield, Walnut, Nebr.; John Adams, Cody, Nebr.; Judson Adams, Minneapolis, Minn.; Orra Adams, Venus, Nebr.; Ruth Adams, Creighton, Nebr.
These with Mrs. Adams and one sister, Mrs. J. H. Price of Walker, Iowa, also fifty-five great-grandchildren survive him.
His Masonic brethren with whom he had been associated, and to whom he gave unstintedly of his time and strength were present and conducted the service at the grave.
The funeral was held at Enterprise, Nebraska, conducted by W. DeBenham of Spencer, Nebr. The church was unable to accommodate the vast throng of friends who gathered to pay their last respects to the deceased, and an open service was given by the pastor in charge. Interment was made in the Enterprise Cemetery.
