Biography

Early Years George Adam was born 2 August 1843 in Monymusk, Aberdeenshire to Peter Adam, joiner and Catherine Gerrie.[1]

In 1851, George was 7 and living with his parents, sisters Jean and Jessie, and brother Peter. Youngest sibling C(K)atherine was just a few months old. His father was a journeyman carpenter. The family lived at the Boat House (also called the Boat Croft) up the River Don from Monymusk, Aberdeenshire.[2]

In 1861, George, at 17, is an unmarried male living with his parents and several younger siblings. Older sister Jean is not present. They are Janet, Peter, Christian (Christina?), a second Catherine as the first one died in infancy, and Barbra (Barbara?). Unmarried male James Strachan is boarding with them. Father Peter is now a carpenter, operator of a beer shop and farmer of 5 acres.[3] [4]

In 1871, George Adam has moved out and is now living in Anderston, Lanarkshire, which is on the north side of Glasgow. He is 27 and working as a "draper warehouseman". He is the eldest of five lodgers at the John and Elizabeth Rankine residence at 12 Minerva Street, Barony, Anderston. The other lodgers range in age from 24 to 9, and are two males and two females.[5]

Marriage George, now 32, warehouseman, married Isabella Moir, farmer's daughter, 24, on 24 July 1879. George's residence is now Rutherglen, located in the greater Glasgow area. Parents present were Peter Adam, Catherine Gerrie, William Moir, farmer, Grace MacFarlane. Witness for Adam: John Johnstone, Minister of Port of Monteith. Witnesses for Moir: Andrew Sutherland, Janet McFarlane. Location: "Netherton Farm, Thornhill by Stirling. After Banns according to the forms of the Church of Scotland."[6]

Moir Genealogy The extensive Moir Genealogy actually references George Adam on page 237: "A daughter, who married George Adam of 11 Alexandria Place, Partick, Glasgow." The unnamed daughter is Isabella (Moir) Adam. Listed in the section Doune and Thornhill Moirs, p. 237, Moir Genealogy[7] Believed to be 11 Alexandra St., now renamed 11 Elie St., Partick, Glasgow, W1.[8]

Later Years By 1881 George (36) and Isabella (26) have moved to the Edinburgh area, specifically 4 Marmion Terrace, St. Cuthberts, Newington, Midlothian. They have a newborn son, Peter Adam, born in 1881. Living with them is George's sister Barbara, now 20, and a servant, Christina McFarlane, age 13.[9] The image of the 1881 census[10] is barely legible, so I am relying on the FindMyPast transcript.

In 1891, George and Isabella, now 46 and 36, have moved to 47 Morningside Drive in Edinburgh. George is an upholsterer's warehouseman. Son Peter is now 10, and there are four other sons and a daughter. These are William Adam (8), George Adam (6) (my grandfather), John Adam (5), Arthur Adam (4), and newborn Arthur Adam Their servant is now Georgina Young, an unmarried female age 22.[11]

In 1901, George and Isabella are 57 and 47, and George is a merchant draper. My grandfather George (16) is the eldest remaining sibling. John H. (15), Arthur G. (12) and Catherine G. (10) are now joined by two more daughters, Isabella Adam (6) and Christina Adam (4). General domestic servant Margaret Tweedale (24), a married female, was also listed on the census.[12]

In 1911, George and Isabella are 67 and 56, and George is a manufacturer's agent in the drapers industry. They are living at 13 Lawrence Street in Partick, Govan, Glasgow. My grandfather George is now 26 and will soon leave to marry Helen Mark in 1914. John H. (25), Arthur G. (22), Catherine G. (20), Isabella H. (16) and Christina E. (14) are living with them, and are all employed as shop salesmen and clerkesses.[13]

The 1915 Valuation Roll lists George Adam as having moved to nearby 16 Lawrence Street in Govan.[14]
