Biography

Harriet was born in 1841. She appears in the 1850 census with her family at age 9 in Indiana.^[1] She was the first child born there, after 6 older siblings born in Ohio. At 19 she was still at home.^[2]

Harriet married William S Tough on 24 October 1865 in Rush, Indiana, United States.^[3]

The years later, they were in Kansas with 3 children. Husband W. S. is a U. S. Marshal. They have L. Abernathy (74, female) with them, no doubt Harriet's mother.^[4] The 1880 census shows the same group, although the surname is spelled Toughe in online transcriptions and the youngest son "S M" in 1875 has become "Littleton" in 1880. William is now a stock dealer.^[5]

The three children are still with William and Hattie (as written this time) in 1900. William is a stockman and the two sons are clerks. They have been married 35 years and Hattie has borne 3 children.^[6]

Harriet died in 1914. The certificate names parents John Abernathy of Virginia and Lavinia Logan of Virginia.^[7] An obituary names survivors John s. Trough and Mrs. H. E. Minty.^[8]
