Biography

Robert Abel was born 01 Oct 1841 in Echt, Aberdeen to George Abel and Anne Duthie^[1]. In the 1851 census, Robert is with his parents and siblings Margaret, Jean and Archibald at Kirkton in Echt^[2].

On 22 December 1860 Robert married Isabella Crawford. He was just 19, a Journeyman Blacksmith and Isabella was 21, a Domestic Servant, from Milltown of Echt. Robert is still at Kirktown, Echt in the 1861 census, still age 19, married, and a Blacksmith Apprentice. He is there with his father, Stepmother Elizabeth, 2 siblings and 2 half siblings^[3].

In the 1871 census, Robert, a Blacksmith, and Isabella are at 60 Skene St in Old Machar, Aberdeen with their children Isabella, Elizabeth, George, and Robert and also two boarders^[4]. One of those boarders was Alexander Mitchell, the half brother of Robert's wife Isabella. They moved sometime between the 1871 census and when their daughter Jane was born on 11 July 1874 to Glasgow. In the 1881 census Robert, Blacksmith, and Isabella were living at 10 Elmvale St in Glasgow along with their children Isabella, George, Robert and Jane. Their daughter Elizabeth was a Shopkeeper living with the Hugh and Barbara Campbell family in Crieff, Perth. Barbara is Isabella Crawford's sister, therefore, Elizabeth's aunt.

In the 1891 census, Robert, a 50 year old Blacksmith, and Isabella are living at 65 Avenue Rd in Springburn, Dennistoun, Lanarkshire with their children Isabella, Elizabeth, Robert, Jeannie and a Domestic Servant. The 1911 census has them living at 4 Edgefault Place in Glasgow. Robert is still a Blacksmith working for Loco Works. Their daughters Isabella and Jeannie are living with them. The 1911 census showed Isabella had 6 children with 5 still living but I have only identified 5 children.

Robert's wife Isabella died in 1921 and Robert died 20 April 1926 at Edgefault Place in Glasgow, Lanarkshire. He had Senile Decay, Jaundice and Heart Failure. Robert is buried in the Sighthill Cemetery in Glasgow along with his wife and daughter Isabella. His son George's name is also inscribed on the gravestone but it is not know if son George is actually buried there or buried in South Africa.
