John was born in Virginia sometime between 1740 and 1750 in Culpeper, Virginia.[1] in Culpeper County, Virginia.[2][citation needed]
He appears on the rolls of the Illinois Virginia Regiment commanded by General George Rogers Clark in 1780 indicating that he had migrated to Kentucky by that date.[1]
