Clifford John Abbott was born on 30th June 1903 in Crows Nest, New South Wales, Australia. He was the third and youngest son of William Abbott and Annie Waugh. [1]
Clifford served as a Gunner in the Australian Army during the Second World War. He enlisted at Paddington, New South Wales on 19 June 1940, signing his Oath of Enlistment on 2 July 1940. [2] At the time he was single, a guillotine hand and was living in Chatswood, NSW. He had black hair and brown eyes.
Clifford was posted to the 5th Battalion, 22nd Infantry Brigade in August 1940. In September, he was transferred to the 22nd Anti-Tank Company. He took sick leave at home in October but returned to his unit that month. [3]
In August 1941 he was transferred to C Company of the 17th Anti-Tank Battery. In October 1941 he was transported by the SS Zealandia to Rabaul, New Britain. He was reported missing during the Battle of Rabaul on 25 January 1942. He was captured at Gavit. He was reported a POW on 28 April 1942. [4]
Clifford was one of many Australian POWs aboard the Japanese auxiliary ship SS Montevideo Maru, being transported to Chinese island of Hainan to be used as labourers, when it was attacked by the American submarine USS Sturgeon. The Montevideo Maru was not properly marked as a POW transport ship. Clifford and over 1,000 other Australians perished at sea following the sinking of the ship on 1 July 1942. [5]
Clifford's service number was NX52416. His name is located at panel 18 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial. [6]
