The book about West Point graduates I am using starts at 1802. It is very interesting to read about the different times. For example, the civil war is called the Rebellion of the Seceding States. I have also learned more about the Florida war, and the Mexican war than I ever learned in school.
I learned new things about some of the more famous officers as well due to the fact that the book is written from a purely historical aspect and no politics skew the information. For example, several of the high ranking Confederate officers worked for a life insurance company in their later years.
There are also several families that have several generations of military service, starting at the revolution. So far I have encountered Ethan Allen, his son, and his grandson. There are several other families the same way also.
