My great grandmother Mary Elizabeth Burns (1884-1925) was Anishinaabe, referring to a large group of indigenous First American Peoples including Ojibwe, Potawatomi, Odawa, and others of the Great Lakes and Eastern Woodlands, including First Nations in Canada and Native Americans. Both of her parents were mixed race and descend from these indigenous first peoples.

I hope to learn more about my ancestors and seek to verify, or put to rest, the family stories that we are descendants of the Onondaga, the Cherokee, Chicamunga, Chickasaw and Choctaw tribes. I will only share the TRUTH with my grandchildren and need proof to do so.

Researching early Massachusetts and Connecticut ancestors, I sometimes come across mention of Native Americans in writings, old legal documents. I feel I ought to do SOMETHING with these -- they're primary sources, or close to it -- but have too little context.

My father's ancestors are from Boyaca, Cundinamarca, Colombia. Our original last name was Pataquiva but it was changed to Venegas in the 20th century when we moved to Bogota (Bacata). We are of the Chibcha tribe which is part of the Muisca indians. Muisca means "The People". I'd love to collaborate with anyone else who knows anything about our lost culture and family.
