Gateway Ancestors

I had entered a gateway ancestor for Edward 3rd in one of the Edward 3rd gateway ancestor threads and although I didn't have enough sources on some of my profiles, which I do now, I was told that the line looked good.

However, since it was a very new/original line down compared to all the other lines, and since it is a gateway into Australia (1839) a first considering all the other gateways pertain to the USA, I was told that I should start a new question/thread separately from the threads that already exist for the Edward 3rd gateway project as my post would probably get lost in amongst the others, and also because my line would constitute a new category  ie gateway into Australia.

I'm ready Freddie and excited to go ...

Any wikitree-ers who are up to speed or involved in this project got any advice on the best way for me to proceed with this ?? Would appreciate the advice.

Cheers, Mark H.

Could you provide a link to this gateway ancestor, please?

Augusta Maria Julia Suffield

migrated to Melbourne Australia in 1839

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Suffield-59

My line is as follows ..

1 Edward 3rd

2 John of Gaunt

3 Joan Beaufort

4 Edward Neville

5 Margaret Neville

6 Thomas Brooke

7 George Brooke

8 Catherine Brooke

9 Frances Jerningham

10 Henry Bedingfeld

11 Henry Bedingfeld

Down to this point is straight forward English history.

For Mary Bedingfeld down to Henry D'arcy Suffield there is collaborating evidence in 'The Topographical-history Norfolk vol5 pp 83-89' , 'Norfolk Pedigrees part 4 by Patrick TR Palgrove-Moore BA FSA' , The History of the Eyre family, a name study, and the Eyre and Suffield Family Tree Charts, and the biography called The Life of Robert Randolph Suffield by Charles Hargrove.  All of which outline the exact same family connections and marriages that I have listed. And my DNA results that I outline on Augusta's page link me directly to the family of her father Henry D'arcy Suffield and mother Maria Augusta Cramer.

12 Mary Bedingfeld  m Thomas Eyre of Hassop

13 Ellen Eyre  m Thomas Woode

14 Mary Woode  m Robert Suffield

15 Robert Suffield  m Judith D'arcy

16 Henry D'arcy Suffield  m Maria Augusta Cramer

17 Augusta Maria Julia Suffield  m Richard Forrest

For 18 - 22 simply use online BDM records in Australia where it has been law for BDMs to registered by law since the 1850s and they are uploaded and free online.

18 John Henry D'arcy Forrest

19 Richard Forrest

20 Sylvia Irene Forrest

21 Margaret Faye Moore Jackson

22 Mark Richard Hutchinson (me)

And anpther line

1. Augusta is the daughter of Henry D'arcy Suffield [confident]
2. Henry is the son of Robert Suffield [confident]
3. Robert is the son of Mary (Woode) Suffield [confident]
4. Mary is the daughter of Ellen (Eyre) Woode [unknown confidence]
5. Ellen is the daughter of Mary (Bedingfeld) Eyre [confident]
6. Mary is the daughter of Henry Bedingfeld 1st Bt [confident]
7. Henry is the son of Henry Bedingfeld [unknown confidence]
8. Henry is the son of Thomas Bedingfeld [unknown confidence]
9. Thomas is the son of Anne (Southwell) Bedingfeld [unknown confidence]
10. Anne is the daughter of Margaret (Neville) Southwell [confident]
11. Margaret is the daughter of Thomas Neville [confident]
12. Thomas is the son of George Neville [confident]
13. George is the son of Edward (Neville) de Neville [confident]
14. Edward is the son of Joan (Beaufort) de Neville LG [confident]
15. Joan is the daughter of John (Plantagenet) of Gaunt KG [confident]
16. John is the son of Edward (Plantagenet) of England [confident]

Hunter's Eyre chart shows Ellen as the daughter of the wrong wife, but if she was only 27 when she died, that has to be wrong.  So much for sources.

These two sources for Ellen Eyre's mother are more reliable and concur with each other  ..

The topographical-history page also contains a lovely epitaph for Ellen written by her husband Thomas Woode, I assume.

I'm excited too Mark! If you can get clear primary proof for parent/child relationships till you hit a person in a trail documented by Douglas Richardson, the Magna Carta Project will have its first Australian Gateway Ancestor! (Although the project uses Richardson's definition of a Gateway - immigrated to America prior to 1700 - we do make exceptions, which would include waiving the "pre-1700" date for an immigrant to Australia.)

Best wishes for success!

P.S. Crawling around your tree, I found #4 in your list - Edward Neville, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Neville-56 - is in a trail badged by the Magna Carta Project. If you're working on a trail to Edward III, that project is led by Joe Cochoit, who is a project coordinator for several projects, including the Magna Carta Project. You're in good hands :D

Mark, I have created an Australian Gateway section on Gateway Descendants from Edward III page, and made Augusta Suffield the first entry.

I can trace every generation with the exception of Augusta's parents.  This is often the case and usually a deal breaker, but I agree the circumstantial evidence (primarily naming patterns) is pretty strong.  I would still like to the argument spelled out a little better, and more detail on the DNA evidence.  Who exactly are these cousins? How close is the DNA match? What are the descents from her parents?

Congrats on what I think is a new line to Edward III.

Thanks you Joe.

In regards to my autosomal DNA test results on Ancestry.com.

I have 47cM in common with a user m2434 who's family tree shows him/her to be William Henry Suffield's 3x great grandchild, and I also have 19cM in common with a user Brain Pendle who's family tree shows him to be Henrietta Suffield's 3x great grandson.

William Henry Suffield and Henrietta Suffield are listed as Augusta's brother and sister, and since I am Augusta's 3x great grandson, the only conclusion is that this has to be correct and Augusta, William Henry and Henrietta have to be the children of Henry D'arcy Suffield and Maria Augusta Cramer who are the closest common ancestors for myself, Brian Pendle and u2434.

All up I have common DNA with 6 descendants of Henrietta Suffield and 2 descendants of William Henry Suffield, but I used the strongest two matches above as examples.

All up, that is eight 5th cousins that I share DNA with that are all descendants of Henry D'arcy Suffield and Maria Augusta Cramer leaving no other explanations other than Augusta Maria Julia Suffield has to be the child of Henry D'arcy Suffield and Maria Augusta Cramer.

Thanks, Mark Hutchinson.
