Does anyone know if he would have been deported for a first offense?  Is there any other record of him appearing before the courts? Just a suggestion ...
i also wonder if he really was exactly 20 in 1829 when his legal troubles were happening.  It is a very round number. It might basically mean that he was of age.  Does anyone know what the standard practice was for assigning the age for these young men?

Imprisonment wasn't really an option at the time.  Transportation or death were the normal sentences for all but minor felonies. Many death sentences were commuted to transportation or even pardoned.  You often find that those sentenced to transportation were previously sentenced to whipping and or short sentences previously

James's own testimony would have been used fill in his age; he may not have known his exact age.

I haven't checked my notes (so from memory),    in a recent lecture by Dr Rosalind Crone ( creator of this  prison database. )  she said that research suggests that  prisoner description information recorded by gaolers was 'accurate' in that very similar info was recorded on subsequent admissions, even to different establishments.

Hi Elaine!  Welcome to WikiTree!

I hope you don't mind; while looking for the birth, i came across an easily accessible free source for his marriage so i added the source to James's marriage directly to his profile.

I'll keep looking for his birth registration.

Cheers

FreeREG has a James Reynolds baptised in Somerset who is the best match. I notice that James named his sons James and George which strengthens the likelihood.

County     Somerset
Place     Pawlett
Church name     St John the Baptist
Register type     Parish Register
Baptism date     03 Sep 1809
Person forename     James
Person sex     M
Father forename     George
Mother forename     Ann
Father surname     REYNOLDS

Thankyou Matthew Fletcher! That information is very helpful!
Maria's father's name seems to be George, so the child's name might not be as strong a clue as hoped.  Next step would be to see if James born to George and Ann is still around in England after our James is deported.
This isn't his baptism.

One of the few times (in my experience) Freereg gets the transcript wrong and that their caveat to check originals is correct. It was a John not a James Reynolds that was  baptised at Pawlett on 3 Sept 1809 .

besides Pawlett is 40 miles from Bath which is said to be James Reynolds native place .

great catch, Helen, and how marvellous to find a detailed physical description!
